Quite a long time I'm trying to do a frugal install on a IDE-CF-Disk with a new kernel.
Background: I have several thin client machines (300 MHz, 64MB Ram, 64MB CF-HD) on which I want to run DSL. Standard frugal installation worked fine, but the boot process lasts 80 sec. So I thought, when I compile the needed modules into the kernel and set the "no-hw-scan"-switch, boot time would decrease.
I do all the Kernel compilations and remastering on a second computer and try to make a CD-Rom to transfer it to the Terminal. I have no direct access to the CF from the Computer on which I compile (vm-ware)
Upto now, i tried the following:
Using Syslinux, the kernel gets too big, no more space left on the mountet loop device
Using isolinux, there comes some checksum error.
Now my two quentions:
1. Is the whole project sensfull? i.e. will the computer boot faster, wenn there's no knoppix-autoconfig?
2. If yes, how do i get DSL boot my new kernel?
