Debian multi-user HD install on a K6/450MHz with 128MB Ram. Changed grub kernel invocation - edited out 'frugal' command. Upgraded to GNU Utils. Enabled Apt. Am on a LAN that gets internet through a NAT server/router and the ADSL modem/nat-router.

MyDSL takes long to show App list. Does not highlight. Sometimes list is empty. Tried to download abiword. Did not exhibit downloading terminal. Download  dialog coming up empty. Selecting another option - 'multimedia' - brings up the the same App (starting with abiword).

I'm slightly flummoxed by this. Which button should I break.... er, push ?  :;):

Oh. And the CD tray keeps popping ini and out a lot, until it subsides in the extended position.

Thanks.

MyDSL is not recomended for hard drive installs and especially for multi-user setup. MyDSL was built for live CD and frugal installs.
But given that...

One issue already reported and solution shown affecting only hard drive installs:

As root:
chgrp staff /opt/.mydsl_dir

This would cause MyDSL extensions downloads to fail.

As far as an empty list. Choose a mirror closer to you.

The only safe MyDSL extension for hard drive install is the UCI type.

 Well, I' trying to remaster a live kiosk BoothCD that was based on DSL. Debian gave me some woe regarding finding the right kernel version needed to compile cloop as recommended. The DSL versions are all 'just right'. I figured a Debian HD install of DSL would might get me the needed environment and tools.

The kiosk CD I`m trying to remaster could benefit from having abiword. I didn't see it on the UCI list. Unfortunately trying to get it via apt-get is accompanied by a general sound of broken packages.

I've already chgrp'd. I'll give the closer mirror a try. Thanks.

:)

Hey whaddya know  It worked ! ( Yay ! )

All it took was
        chgrp staff /opt/.mydsl_dir
The MyDSL dialog worked fine. Download went like a breeze. The Icon's on the Desktop. Abiword is working.

This was done on my test rig. Tomorrow I'll try it on production.

Now, for some iso loop mounting - and more horseing around.

Thanks !!!

Ok. Powered off on 07/12, and rebooted today.

Upon boot, the /etc/rcS.d/ S00... and S01... scripts are having trouble altering /etc/sysconfig/... files. "Read-only file system". Same for /etc/fstab.new (cannot be created ). mtab serves a complaint that fstab doesn't have a trailing newline.

I get the impression that part of the scripts are run twice.

Can't poweroff, i stays in the tty. logoff just hangs the tty.

I'm opening a new topic with details of the bootup readout.
