Check your additional boot parameters, such as noapic Compare with the working cdrom and non-working debian hd install. Locations will depend on boot loader and which cd type you were successfui with.
Or simply, use the DSLpanel, click on System Stats, look in boot tab from the working cd or poorman's install.
Then be sure you use the same options, for power, apm apic and also dma etc. Some boot parameters do not apply to debian style hd install.
Try your debian style install. If it fails,. then boot from cdrom and mount your hard drive to fix/adjust boot parameters.
