I now have the old Dell laptop set up to dual boot Windows ME and Damn Small Linux (DSL). As noted above, I installed Win ME first. I then installed DSL to the empty partition. I booted DSL as a live CD. Using "cfdisk" I formatted the partition to a linux partition and created a linux swap partition. Then I did a hard drive install (DSL has made this very easy). I was expecting a difficult roadblock to get the computer to do the dual boot thing. But upon restarting, a black screen automatically came up (no extra inputs from me) allowing me to choose to boot Win ME or Linux (it just says "linux"). It even defaults to Linux in 10 seconds. Lovely. I've booted up the computer 7-8 times now and the dual boot option works nicely.
I have been working on getting MyDSL to work and install apps to DSL, but without success. Particularly, I want to get "wine" installed. I have the file (in .deb and .dsl formats). No results, yet.
I was pleasantly surprised at the dual boot success. I found a few other posts that discussed some tweaking that I was gearing up for. But I didn't have to do anything special.
