So I did a frugal install, but when I boot into dsl, it recognizes my optical mouse in the psaux port as generic wheel mouse etc., but I am not allowed to use it. Any ideas or advice?

You could run xsetup (xsetup.sh from cmdline) and see if choosing your mouse there works.  (then restart X if running)
