CF cards are very problematic for any Linux install.  Things like swap and /proc, /etc/fstab will kill the card with writes.

You have to find some way to stop the constant writing, or put them somewhere else.

This is why I am going with an IDE to CF adapter that supports TWO CF devices.  The first will be a CF card, the second will be a CF microdrive (I have seen the 4Gb Hitachi on ebay cheap.  Seagate is a bit pricier).

Personally, I would do a frugal install to the CF.

This could be done on a separate computer with ide/cf adapter if needed.
.
The CF could be placed in a pcmcia/cf adapter and placed in notebook computer. If you are so lucky to be able to boot from pcmcia then great. If not, you can still boot from floppy and run DSL from pcmcia/cf. I have done this on several old notebooks. I have also replaced the notebook hard drive with a notebook style ide/cf adapter.

Because frugal install is an emulation of running from CD it is better suited for CF than traditional hard drive installation.
