Greetings fellow DSLers.

Just noticed that DSL 4.2.4 is available - been playing with dsl-n and 3.2.3/3.2.5 for a whilie now. Since I had just done an hdinstall a few hours earlier for 3.2.3, I know this works fine, but under 4.2.4 the hd-install hangs at

> setting up /home/dsl
> tar: removing leading '/' from member names.

A quick check of the script shows it probably made it as far as line 215 (mkdir $TR/mnt/floppy) but doesnt get past that to create $TR/mnt/hd. I'm guessing that the automounter is somewhat touchy about manipulating it's mount point since dmesg is showing a mount for /dev/fd0 onto /mnt/auto/floppy. The mount naturally fails and hangs since there's no floppy on this laptop. There's also no 'auto' anything in 'ps' so I'm guessing this functionality has been moved to the kernel ? (lsmod doesnt show anything auto'ish either). I tried to edit the fstab and commenting out the auto stuff before starting the hdinstall, but to no avail.

Any ideas or suggestions ? not a bother if I backup to 3.2.3 but this new 4.2.4 releases looks really nice !  Nice Job !

/ Peter

Usually that doesn't cause any problems, only if you booted from a bootfloppy you need to have the floppy in.

There isn't an automounter running; those mount points get created on boot.

Perhaps remove all >/dev/null redirections from the install file, to see all messages?

I've done hard drive installs on floppy-less laptops and desktops without any such problem. Including with DSL 4.2.4 to test new kernels and try to improve wifi support. The floppy mount point is irrelevant because it's not mounting anything; the knoppix-hotplug script will continually rewrite fstab anyway and include the point for floppy whether one exists or not. The only time fstab would be relevant in that situation is if you tried to mount the point, and you would get back a standard device or block error message.

I don't know what the problem is with your computer. But I'm pretty sure it isn't anything to do with that line in the install script.

BTW, did you repartition or at least check your partitions  to make sure you don't have an issue with your hard drive?

Thanks Curaga and Lucky13 ! .. troubleshooting with eyes crossed (and fiiinicky keyboard) should be avoided :-) .. turns out the answer is pretty lame: the hd-install script fell thru to line 232: mount the floppy since it couldnt figure out what kind of boot took place. I usually boot with "toram" so the script would fail because the cdrom wasnt mounted. <sigh>  Obvious when one's eyes are'nt crossed .. which makes me think it's way past my bed time again :-P ..    Thanks again folks !
