I wrote an entire post about USBkeys.. 
I wonder if the bootusb-0.8 image floppy would work better ? It would possibly detect your USB HD better, but it still will look for a /knoppix/knoppix compressed filesystem.

I don't know how your lilo was setup when you completed the HDInstall .. And, I'm assuming your Motherboard can boot from a USB-HDD device..
Lilo is usually the bootloader for HDInstalled systems .. But can your computer GET to the bootloader?
