Linux newbie,

I downloaded DSL, was able to boot up via CD-ROM on laptop.

My laptop this week was hit by some new and very nasty worms/trojans and VX2 variants coming to a theatre near you soon.

The main issue is that I need to delete files from my hard drive. Safe mode does not work due to the virus has worked its way into running during safe mode on XP system.

I thought that using DSL I might be able to use one of the GUI to aid me in doing this. This new virus randomly creates dll's so I need to do an intense search on my harddrive for many files.

Is it possible to access hard drive of laptop by just booting DSL from CD-ROM?

Thanks for all the help in advance!

Joel

Access them - Yes

Be able to delete them - No

You need a distro with Windows XP NT file system read/write capability.

Try a different livecd distro like knoppix or one that includes something called "captive ntfs" and you should be able to delete the files.

VX2 is indeed a nasty bit of malware. Yes you can access the drive, (read it) with DSL, but you won't be able delete anything because you won't have write access to NTFS partitions. Even if you could delete the files, the next time you booted up XP it would freak because of the files missing, at least that has been my expirience. On my Dad's machine I could not get the VX2 stuff out, so ended up reinstalling, does this sound like Windows or what!
