alrighty. For my first ever question on the DSL forums I would like to know how to change the resolution of the startup of DSL to the same resolution that the computer begins in.
I have DSL install on my HD so I have tried changing the vga=xxx in Lilo but I still keep getting 1024*768 when I enter DSL startup. I have an ancient monitor and it doesn't too much care for the high resolution.
I have found one way. I seems that DSL is linked to the vesa resolution so when I start the window manager and the resolution is changed to 800*600 it is wonderful. What is not so wonderful is then after closing the window manager and going to console mode it is just bits of colors all over the place. anybody else experience this? and if so how do I fix it? and would this be the way to fix DSL startup resolution?

Try adding vga=normal to your append line in LILO.

Don't forget to rerun lilo after saving your new config file.

IE:

sudo su
lilo -v

I tried that and lilo gives me a Fatal error.

Fatal: APPEND or LITERAL may not contain "vga="

what I did do though was changed the vga=xxx (x= some number) to normal up at the top of the configure file. Then reran Lilo as you instructed. This worked well. Thank you much And thanks for whoever changed the topic title to a more sain name.

EDIT: killed all the birds with that stone. It also fixed the scrambling of the screen when you exit the window manager.

Gee... After the hard drive install isn't there an
XF86Config file that can be tinkered with? I haven't tried that yet,
but I like to use a slightly bigger virtual screen, which gets very big
at lower resolutions.
(Handy for those tiny fonts)

Actually,

By default DSL doesn't use the XFree86 window system.  It uses the TinyX / Kdrive / Freedesktop.org Xservers that are derived somewhat from XFree86 but use less memory and disk space.

Unfortunately, this means that if you edit the XF86Config file, your new settings will be ignored.

Unless you download and install the xfree86.dsl extension, of course.
