I have a pc with no cd-rom and WIn98 on it, so I was wondering how to install DSL on the HD in dualboot-mode.
Partitions are hda1 - fat32 - primairy
hda2 is extended:
hda5 - fat32
hda6 - linux - (reserved for DSL)
hda7 - linux - SuSE7.3 without X
I have the dsl-ISO on a usb-HD-Drive and want to install from theire to hda6.

I figured out the following:
Boot into SuSE and mount usb-hd and hda6
go to the dsl-ISO on the usb-hd
dd if=dslxxxxxxx.iso of=/dev/hda6

Should this work....or not ???

No respons from this list.....

I only asked for a method to install dsl on a certant partition. I would like to know if the "dd"-methode will do it. Remember I do not want a rewritten mbr, because I want to boot dsl from a floppy, same way as I boot SuSE from a floppy.

Richard.

The only way to know for sure is to give it a try.

My advice is to do a "poormans" install.  Search the forums for more details.

Quick summary:

Copy your \knoppix\knoppix over to C:\knoppix\knoppix on a FAT or FAT32 partition.

or if linux partition is in hda1,

copy to

/mnt/hda1/knoppix/knoppix

Then download and create a boot floppy.

Insert boot floppy and away you go.

Okay,

I placed the knoppix-map (part of the ISO I think you mean) on hda1, that means in my case C:/knoppix/ on Win98. And I downloaded and made a bootdisk.
I booted with it (without any parameters after "boot"), but nothing...
Tryed also with "dsl fromhd=/dev/hda1".............nothing

So wat now...

Make sure that your directory and filenames are all lower case.

C:\knoppix\knoppix

is GOOD

C:\Knoppix\Knoppix
or
C:\KNOPPIX\KNOPPIX

is BAD.

You shouldn't need any special boot parameters.  If you have a normal IDE disk controller it should be autodetected.  Unless your Windows partition is somewhere crazy like /dev/hda5 for example.
