I'm doing this on a Sony Vaio PCG-F250. It's an Intel Celeron 333 with 32MB of RAM.

everything goes fine until it gets to the rebooting. Then it just sits there. I unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery expecting it to have the same result as a reboot. But when I turn it back on it gives me a "Missing Operating System" message.

I'm doing this install on a wiped drive so maybe the problem is that I don't have lilo installed?

Ok so after trying it again, this is what bash gives me:

Code Sample

The copying of System files has been completed
setting up /root/
setting up /home/dsl/
tar: Removing leading '/' from member names
cp: cannot stat '/mnt/bootimg/boot/isolinux/linux24': No such file or directory
The installation process is finished
The next Step is the boot loader
Do you want to run mkliloboot now? (yes/...)y
/dev/scd0 on /cdrom type iso 9660 (ro)
/dev/cloop on /KNOPPIX type iso 9660 (ro)
/ramdisk on /ramdisk type tmpfs (rw,size=19156k)
/proc/bus/usb on /proc/bus/usb type usbdevfs (rw,devmode=0666)
/dev/hda2 on /mnt/hd type ext2 (rw)
gzip: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, or too many filesystems
unmount:/mnt/l1: not mounted
Setting up boot loader (LILO) into the master boot record..
Warning: '/proc/partitions' Does not exist, disk scan bypassed
Fatal: Open /boot/linux24: No such file or directory
}The lilo boot installation process is finished.

Does any of the above give a clue as to why I get a 'Missing Operating System' message when I start my laptop?

It looks as if your using the syslinux version of DSL,
or trying it from a pendrive version, neither which contain
the /boot directory the script output you posted seeks..

Grab a copy of the dsl-1.3.iso , burn it, or mount it.
Get the /boot directory off of it, and onto your pendrive.
Or, boot from it, and run the HDinstall from that.

I have to add the /boot directory to my pendrive to do HDInstalls.
Once I do , they work fine.
Lilo needs those files to point to..
