Here's my opportunity to try the major (IMHO) advantage to frugal over a normal hd install. And it appears to work (hard to tell between 1.3 and 1.3.1) once I puzzled it out.

I wasn't quite sure how to go about it. Looking at std vs embedded vs syslinux, I was surprised to see that at least 2 of the .KNOPPIX files were differerent. At least they had different sizes and timestamps. I would've expected them to be identical, only served with different side dishes for the different types. I just went with the one from the same type as I'd installed.

I think it would be nice to have a HOWTO of pushing the update, or better, a script that could be run from the booted CD. (I'm assuming you can't pull one while KNOPPIX is mounted on CLOOP.) That might contribute to helping to "sell" frugal.

/usr/sbin/frugal_instal.sh asks if you want to upgrade, so that's one option.  It should have no trouble pulling the KNOPPIX file while it's mounted.

Another option is boot up a liveCD, download the latest ISO, mount it (sudo mount -o loop /path/to/dsl-1.3.iso /mnt/test), and copy the KNOPPIX file into your frugal partition.

Thanks Mikshaw. When 1.3.2 comes out I'll give it a try. Particularly the 1st.

Although I've been around the block often enough to understand the 2nd (but not enough to figure it out for myself :), I'm still looking for newbie-friendly solutions. I really think that frugal is the best thing on sliced bread when the bread is rather old and stale.

Just remember that you cannot use this method for upgrading to 1.3.x, due to massive changes in the way things work. Especially the backup system.

You have to replave everything.

Read the announcement from before it was released for details.
