sorry for this post, but search for no cd install found nothing
basically i have old laptop no cdrom drive, with nic card..

i.ve been running basic linux on it for now but would like to try
dsl..

Copy the /KNOPPIX directory from the CD onto the hard drive (at top, so it should be x:/KNOPPIX, where x is your drive letter). Download rawrite2.exe from the Internet (search via Google) and put it in the /KNOPPIX directory on your hard disk. Set up your floppy drive and boot using a floppy. Get a new, formatted floppy and put it in the drive. Go to x:/KNOPPIX at the initial command prompt and type "rawrite2.exe". When asked for a boot image, type "boot.img". When asked for a floppy drive, you'll probably want "a:". It will start loading the DSL loader onto the floppy. When done, restart your system with the floppy in the drive. Make sure your floppy is set to boot before your hard drive, and then watch as DSL loads. Voila!

This didn't work for me. I've tried everything. It seems boot.img in 5.2 isn't working. Anyone else having trouble?

I installed the latest version of DSL, 5.something, on a laptop with no CDROM drive, by using an Iomega Zip Disk, and a floppy distro called tomsrtbt. i booted the laptop with tomsrtbt, and then partitioned the hard drive and created a swap partition. Rebooted and mounted the Zip drive, and i copied the DSL .iso to the hard drive, mounted it there and copied the KNOPPIX directory to the first partition. Then I made the boot floppy, and rebooted again, DSL found the /KNOPPIX directory and booted OK. It thinks the hard drive is the CD Drive right now, but it works OK in text mode. The laptop is a Pentium 75, with 16 MB RAM, and a 10GB HDD. I'm going to try a real full HD install soon, I'll post my results.

Before DSL,Toms was my favourite bit of computing kit.
I really loved that little floppy and used to customise it so it loaded loopfiles & printer modules etc.
Learned loads of linux from trying to deconstruct his scripts

Still on his mailing list.

Guess the love of lean and mean has carried over to Damn Small.
