Starting DSL today, I am greeted by a changed DSL. The background is grey (the one you get just before the wallpaper comes on), taskbar and the slit are all black, and the fluxbox menu (also black) only shows 3 items: xterm, Restart and Exit.
xterm starts Bash console, Restart does nothing, and Exit obviously ends the x server (sorry if this isn't the correct terminology).

Restarting X doesn't do anything to remedy the situation, as does rebooting.
/home/dsl/.fluxbox/menu stil shows the correct menu entries, and everything else seems to be working fine, so what's the problem here and how can I solve it?

Thanks

maybe you changes the default number of colors in your xserver?

Get out of X , to the shell..  ( crtl-alt-bksp ) or "exit" from the desktop

run this

xsetup.sh

choose XVesa or Xfbdev, whichever runs on your system
(XVesa is the default, unless you chose an fbXXXxXXX at boottime)

xserver - mouse - resolution - color
eventually, you'll get to the part that asks about color ( bit selection )
Choose 16 bit or better..

once you are returned to the prompt, type startx ..

This rewrites the .xserverrc defaults..

Let us know if it works for you..

No, sorry to say it doesn't. I don't think it's about colours, though. All icons display properly.

I have no clue what could have caused this. I didn't do anything to the poor thing!

EDIT: In /home/dsl/.fluxbox the file "init" is empty. Could this be it?

Yes, that could be, and probably is, it.  There is a backup you can get to replace it:
1) Exit fluxbox
2) Type these command:
sudo cp -f /etc/skel/.fluxbox/init /home/dsl/.fluxbox/init
sudo chown dsl.staff /home/dsl/.fluxbox/init
3) startx

Thanks mikshaw! That's exactly what did the trick. I thought my HD install was doomed.
