I believe DSL is a streamlined OS based on Knoppix. Knoppix is up to version 4.0 and uses the Linux 2.6 kernel. Klause Knopper and his team did an excellent job of automating hardware detection. Thats why the live cd boots right up on so many machines. Knoppix is based on the Debbian distro, probably Sarge by now. Many DSL users are looking for a light, fast OS to utillize older hardware. So DSL is using the 2.4 kernal default in Knoppix 3.4 and earlier. This is a good example of the team effort of Linux users sharing and customizing the OS. I'm new at this so my view might not be totally accurate but perhaps it will help. Mort
