I have a Thankpad 365XD (yes the dreaded 365XD) and used Smart Boot Manager to boot to the CD, then install DSL.  I decided that since I would likely not need to boot to CD again, (or, if I did, could do so through LILO) so I let LILO overwrite the MBR.  After this, my laptop refused to load, giving the error code for no OS found.

Is there a way to fix this problem?

Why not using GRUB?

I had Kanotix installed (a very good knoppix-clone) which installs a GRUB-Bootmanager. But you can easily install it by yourself without Kanotix, just google for it and get it from the net.

With GRUB I can select if I want to boot up Kanotix, Knoppix, DSL, Win98 and Win XP.There are no problems with MBR providing you have "chainloader+1" set in the grub/menu.lst for the windows versions.

I just copied just the iso-images of Kanotix and Knoppix, so you can say I had a Poorman's Install.

Now I decided to install DSL instead of the isos (I only need to copy the isos back to use them, so I am very flexible ) as it consumes much less space. It works fine although I have some problems with DSL that do not depend on the booting process (You'll here from me in another posting).... :-)

I don't understand why people still mess up with LILO....

Bye!

Pixie, use your smart boot manager to boot the cd again. When you get to the cd's boot prompt, choose for the cd to boot your already installed dsl HDinstall. You can then get to your lilo configuration and fix the problem. Check your configuration of /etc/lilo.conf, fix whatever needs to be fixed and don't forget to run /sbin/lilo before you reboot!
