Hey, this is my first time trying linux, and it really show how much I don't know.  I would really appreciate any help you guys could give me.

The computer I am trying this on is a 450mhz AMD K6 with 256 MB of ram.  It has an nVidia Geforce 2 graphics card and two hard drives.  The master HD is a 15 gig that I would like to keep intact because I might want to go back to windows at some point.  It also has some important files on it.  The HD I would like to install DSL on is a 1.2 gig.   I am currently running Windows 2K.

I was able to run DSL in LiveCD form, and I'm curious enough to see the kind of performance boost it would get me over windows if I put it on the HD.  The drive I would like to put linux on is F right now.  It is a slave, and the master is C.  The hdinstall doesn't seem to work for some reason.

I tried to put in all the relevant info I could.  I definitely have a lot to learn, so it would help if you can explain things in newbie friendly terms.  Thanks in advance for any of the help you can provide.

als814,

While many folks do use the "old-school" method of installing and running Linux,
DSL offers other alternatives that will perform better, use less HD space,
allow you to use many of the special features of DSL,
and make your system much more tolerant of errant programs
and errors from experimentation with your new Linux Filesystem.

First, try booting from your LiveCD using the "toram" option.

at the boot prompt, type..

dsl dma toram (press enter)

This will place your entire DSL filesystem into your ramspace.
DSL will be running at the top speed that your computer can perform at.

From here, search the forums for the word ' frugal ' ..
A frugal install mirrors the LiveCD, but eliminates the need
to either boot or run from the CD itself.. Again, it can load 'toram' ,
just like the LiveCD does, for maximum performance.

The biggest benefit, I think, is in the reboot !
No matter how bad you, or an application, hoses your system,
You can "reboot clean" , and get back to where you began,
with all your settings, preferences, and files intact..

This is where I frequently see new Linux users get frustrated
with most all Linux distributions, when an attempt to 'fix'
something becomes an unworkable nightmare....  ,
usually resulting in a fresh re-install, losing all of your
previous settings and preferences..

Frugally installed DSL is like a "fresh custom install"
every time you boot your computer up.

You'll find the staff and userbase here at DSL very helpful,
but do try to browse the docs and forums for answers
to your challenges before you request assistance..
