It can be done with just one big partition, but if you don't have much ram it's a good idea to make a swap partition. The general rule for swap is to make it twice the size of your actual ram. Just in case you don't know, this makes an extended- if somewhat slow- memory system. My system has 256 Mb ram with 500 Mb swap, but I honestly don't think the swap has ever been touched.
