Hi,

I am new to linux systems and installed the Damnsmalllinux OS to the HD of a P1 pc. The install did not detect the Network card. I need step-by-step instructions on how to install the network card manually.

Regards

I don't have a DSL box around right now so the following may not be 100% correct:
First you have to find out what network card you have. If it is a PCI card then the command lspci should list it. Then you have to figure out which module (driver in winspeak) to load - try googling. You load the module like this: modprobe "nameofmodule" (without quotes). Finally you have to use dhcpc (again from the command line) to to get an ip-address and setup the network (assuming this is how your network is setup). To automate this you can put the commands in some start-up file - I'm not sure which file, but someone in this forum should know.

You say "not detected". Do you mean ifconfig doesn't show any interface? If yes, then you need to determine what adapter you have installed, then find the module required, as described in another post. If ifconfig shows the interface, maybe eth0, then you need to configure the interface.

Good luck, jimbo

Hi,

Thanx for the help. I have a iso type netcard installed in the pc. I downloaded the isopnptools-1.26 package and unpacked it to the HD. When I follow the installation guide and type ./configure --prefix=/user --exec-prefix= i can see that there are alot of other packages needed eg autoconf, automake, gcc or cc ect. Do i have to search for all these packages or do you know of a pre-packaged file containing all?

Regards

Do you mean an ISA-card? In that case it may even not be pnp. I suggest that you open the box and look at the card itself to see if you can find some info, maybe some data on the integrated circuits. Then do some googling to find which module you needs (or post it here), and follow what I said above.
