Hello Everyone. I am completely new to linux. I found an old Toshiba Satellite t2130cs laptop running windows 3.1 lying around in the garage. I want to put DSL on it because I wish to dabble in linux and DSL is probably the only linux distro that will run on it.

Because there is no cd-rom drive I want to try the poormans install but I have no way of getting the files onto the hardive. I took out the 500mb hd and tried to connect it to my windows xp machine but the hd cable is different (go figure). I read about a network file transfer but I dont know how to set up a network in windows 3.1.

Do any of you guys have an idea to get the KNOPPIX folder on there? And do i have to partition the drive first?

Is there a floppy install?

If all else fails, see if you can get a hold of an external USB hard drive case that takes the smaller 2.5" laptop hard drives, and connect that to you other computer

There is a floppy drive, but what do you mean by floppy install? I know i cant fit a 50mb file on a floppy, and i dont have 50 of them. im going to look into that external floppy case. Thanks.

Try reading this from the wiki:
http://damnsmalllinux.org/wiki....tall%29

If you can't connect to the net as described, but can connect to another machine all you need to get accross to the hard drive is the KNOPPIX directory with the KNOPPIX file in it (make sure all the names are capitals. Once you've done that grab a copy of the bootfloppy.img file from the DSL download site, get yourself something that will write a floppy image to a floppy (rawwrite for dos/win, or use dd in linux - e.g. tomsrtbt). Boot the pc using the floppy created with this image file & it will use the KNOPPIX file you copied to the hard drive. From there you can set up DSL to boot from the hard drive (suggest you use the install frugal option in the menu)

How much RAM do you have?

In my opinion, the minimum requirements for DSL are 12MB for text mode and 16MB for graphical window mode.
