Hello,

Disclaimer: As you'll see my technical experience is limited but not non-existent , so please be patient - for the record I've tried searching the forums, wiki etc before posting here. For any answers that came close to helping me I was either too dumb to follow them or else they didn't specifically address my concerns...

I'm just about ready to install DSL on a old Portege 320CT (266MHz, Ram 32MB, 4 GB) using a boot floppy and CD with latest image on it. The laptop currently has Windows 95.

Under normal circumstances the Protege 320 relies on a dock for CD and floppy drive etc. I only have one on loan for the next few days, so this is what I would like to do:

Install DSL so it boots on startup without the need for any floppy/usb/cd. At the same time, remove W95, make any recommended partitions, and setup a wireless card (D-Link Wireless card - don't have exact model no.) (I'm not concerned with deleting any data etc. already on the computer).

I'm also not going to worry about the unusual screen dimensions just yet (but any info on that would also be welcome) - I believe its 1024x600.

I have the bootable floppy, CD and have loaded DSL that way.

So, if someone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it...

Thanks,
Michael

Try doing a frugal install using the instructions here.

The first thing you'll want to do is delete all of your old partitions using cfdisk.  This will get rid of Window$, as well as all of the data on the machine. Then you can start fresh using Clivesay's walkthrough (above).

--PS.  I would recommend a "frugal grub install" as opposed to the lilo install.

Good Luck,

Thats seems perfect!

I won't be able to try this until later but thats pretty much what I need. Thank you...

The next steps are (1) getting things to show up in the correct screen dimensions, and (2) how to install the D-Link wireless card

But I know there's material out there so I'll try searching that first before clogging the forums!

Finally got it up and running. The above manual was extremely helpful - thanks again.

My big issue was with getting the partitions etc up and working properly. I've kept track of all the steps I went through and other iseful links. So next time I get a chance i'll add that to the
DSL Wiki.

Next step is to get the laptop screen (1000x600) properly configured. Currently its 800x600 and empty black space on either side!

All the best,
Michael
