I have a 120 gig hd, need to install non-mydsl apps: fetchmail, courier, procmail, postfix, spamassassin.

I fdisked the drive, made a little partition of 300 megs. I used the Apps->Tools->Install To HD. The html popup page on DSL login says nothing about needing swap space, but I've since seen references to swap in the forums. Do I need swap? I've got 512 M memory chip, thought I wouldn't need swap.

To install the apps I need, I'll partition the remaining free space on HD. How do I tell DSL about that space, and get him to install and run apps there?

With 512MB of RAM, you don't NEED swap.

However, if you ever find yourself in the situation where you are doing some video editing or other RAM intensive work or maybe just have 20 programs running at the same time, there is a chance that you will run out of RAM and crash.

However, with a swap partition, this will not happen until you run out of RAM + swap space.
