DSL installed on hd all by itself. After the system does its checks on lilo bootup I get.
[/] root

I type
sudo su

I get
su{pam_unix}[43]:session opened for user root by{uid=0}
root@box:/#

I'm new at this and am very confused. I don't know what it wants to allow me in. I have other questions but first things first. Please help.

Thank you, Butch

The default user (DSL) is on the sudoers list, so you can sudo su without a password.  It looks like you're getting a root command prompt.  Not sure why it's not going straight to X, more info is needed to diagnose that one.  Try running startx& or xsetup.sh for starters.

Thanks runlevel5,
  Tried your suggestion. Didn't work, but I believe the problem is a poorly burned cd. I bought several
linux os's from an listing on ebay.  Most of them had some type of flaw. The problem with the dsl didn't
show up until is was installed to hd. It was telling me that it had flaws on the hd boot up, but I didn't
know what I was looking at until your response let me know something was wrong. The cd I have is for
the 1.5 version. I'm going to get the latest version and give it another try.
    Thank you for your time and effort,
