I've been doing a little study myself..... Try this...
If you can access your soundcard settings in your bios, change your irq to 7 - it seems the yenta IDE grabs irq5 on my box If not, try this anyway using irq=5 in place of irq=7..
" sudo su " to root...
" rmmod soundcore " " modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=7 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330 " " modprobe opl3 "
then exit X ( ctrl-alt-bksp ) and restart " startx " Do you see the wmix mixer app ?
