I am using the DSL xine package and I noticed that the sharpness and smoothness of the video playback is not as good as my previous linux distro.

On my previous install I was using the ATI fglrx 3D driver.

I have tried to install the the ATI driver on DSL but I always have a problem with the package md5sum. I have tried downloading 6 or 7 times.

a) Will the ati fglrx driver improve the sharpness and quality of the video playback.
b) Why do I always have the package error. There are no probs on my other system.
c) Are there any other methods to improve performance?

I have nvidia, which has (as far as I've heard) much better support in linux than ati.  I could say "ATI sucks in Linux", but that would be just hearsay.  Anyway, for what it's worth, I've used XFree86.dsl + nvidia.dsl to get useable performance from movies and games.  You will want at least xfree86....i doubt the ati driver will work with xvesa.

The nVidia opensource (nv) driver is quite limited, but the proprietary nVidia driver is fully DRI-compatible.
There is a DSL package available (for the 2.4.26 kernel) which has all necessary DRI modules.
So nVidia is a good choice to work with DSL.

The opensource Xfree86 ATi Radeon driver does support DRI, but requires additional DRI modules which are not presently available as DSL packages.

The proprietary fglrx ATi driver also supports DRI, and probably compiles the kernel-specific DRI modules during installation.
So you are probably getting an error message when the installer fails to find the necessary build tools in DSL.
You could fix this by installing the build tools; gcc1.dsl and gnu-utils.dsl from

Of course, the XFree86.dsl package must be installed first.

Xorg claims that their opensource ATi driver is better than the proprietary version.
