I recently installed DSL onto an old laptop of mine (Toshiba Satellite Pro 425CDS - Pentium 100MHz with 40MB of RAM) and was able to get sound working by using sndconfig. However, I found if I try to play an mp3 in XMMS, the sound becomes extremely choppy after the amount of the mp3 that was buffered has been played.
I noticed that in /etc/modutils/sndconfig, it's using the 'sb' module to play audio, although the actual sound chip I have is the ess688. I don't know if that means much though.
Has anyone else had this problem or can suggest some possible remedies?
I cranked up the buffer size in XMMS, and it sure enough will play the mp3 perfectly for the length of the buffer, but after that it gets choppy and everything
EDIT: I just tried disabling ACPI from the lilo.conf via "noacpi" and the same effect still exists.
EDIT 2: the mp3 plays fine if I exit out of X and play it with mpg321.
