I have dsl installed on a compaq presario, amd k-6 @ 533mhz.
The hard drive is a 20 gig. 256 mb ram. Works perfectly. Spent many hours finding, downloading, and installing everything I wanted. I started from scratch with linux, knowing nothing about it beforehand. I recently installed a Philips dvd-r,cdrw combo drive. I did not have any programs for dvd playback. The drive itself worked perfectly at this point. Very fast.
I downloaded M-player, and put a dvd in. The drive cut on, sped up, and appeared to be working. Then it hung. and hung. and hung. Tried the paperclip thing, nothing. Tried to unmount, nothing. Sent a shutdown command, everthing shut off, except the drive. The text displayed on my moniter was something like this,

kill command sent to /dev/....
no response...
pci bus reset to 0....
waiting on /dev/....

It repeated this several times, these are not exact.
Then it said

pci bus is at 0...no response
kill command sent....no response
kill command sent,pci at 0,yet no response....strange.

Finally, it stopped and the computer shut off. This is about 15 minutes after all this started. Now, the computer will not recognize the drive at all. No matter the jumper settings, the configuration, nothing. It is like there is nothing there. It comes on appears to read,...nothing. I even took it to a friend, put it on his, running xp, nothing. Like its not there at all.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Sounds like your drive died. R. I. P.

What is this "paperclip thing" you speak of?
