So, I learned to make live CD's, I learned to USB-boot sorta, and I learned to do frugal and it works.

Now the next big thing is sound.  And I could use some help.

Info as I understand it:
Latest DSL version frudal's on the 2 gig, with a 128 swap partition and the rest all data partition (Don;t know if this matters; there was no sound with LiveCD or with USB-boot either on this machine, and the sound works on other machines I have)

Computer Compaq something sempron 3200+,  512 RAM
Motherboard :MS-7184
Onboard sound (according to google): Controller AC-97,
Realtek ALC658C 6-channel CODEC chipset
(EDIT: lspci shows this: "0000:00:14:5 Multimedia audio controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 5954")

Symptoms: No sound, XMMX says "cannot play sound, check your XYZ's" (the only one I can't figure out is which IRQ it's supposed to be on. , Game apps have no sound.  Exception: the little speaker on the motherboard beeps when i screw up on taipei.

Helpful(???) Info: during booting, at the part there it is "auto-configuring devices)  I get a message like this:

"modprobe; can't locate module block-major-2"
(EDIT: If this means "you don't got no FDD" as I am thinking, it probably hasn't anything to do with the sound anyway, because this machine doesn't have a floppy drive :)

I can get other info if you tell me how, I would REALLY love to have sound work on this, the Doom port lookls so lovely, but I need sound for Doom!

The same mackine, (with a different hard drive stuck in, of course)  plays sound fine under XP.

thanks

SMAG

EDIT2: Tried the alsa thing using snd-atiixp, not sure what I'm doing.  Another message I got when trying to open an MP3 from emelFM was this: "** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such device"

learning, but still clueless and silent :)

EDIT 3: Got it working!!!! nyah!
