Using DSL 4.2.4 on a USB pendrive I've downloaded mplayer-1.0pre8cvs.uci to try my hand at CLIs.

So far I've managed to get streamed audio from radio SWR 3 but I'm having problems getting any audio cd to play.

It should be a simple command "mplayer filename(s)" but I can't work out how to view the files on the cd currently loaded in the cdrom drive.

See the cdda options in the docs, i.e. http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/man/en/mplayer.1.html

You can also use the included xmms program to listen to audio CDs:
xmms  /dev/cdrom
this is assuming /dev/cdrom is your cdrom device

EDIT: well that's weird. It doesn't seem to work anymore.
Ignore what I said until I figure this out

Re the cdda: I've bookmarked the mplayer link for further study.

Meanwhile in response to "xmms cdrom" xmms loads on the desktop and starts playing track 01/15 without any sound output.

The terminal response is:

"libasound.so.2:cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory /usr/lib/xmms/Input/libccddread.so: undefined symbol: playlist_generate_shuffle_list
libmikmod.so2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
libGL.so1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory    "

If I can get audio output from streamed radio how come the cdrom can't produce any?
