Hey you dudes!!!

I HD installed DSL on my box, I wanted get rid of my windows install for ages now, the thing is that I don't have sound on my pc now.

Dsl detects an pnp sound chip, coz I have a ALS1x0 sound card. I have the gnu-utils and dsl-dpkg installed. When I do the alsa install it does its thing but when it creats the soundcard database it quits, Is that normal?, cos there is no error msg. I browsed the forum and tried some of the things that is mentioned here, but to no avail. I have alsa in my boot and it say that it ALSA(autodetect) it, but when it sets up the module(I think modprobe) it doesn't.

I really want to use linux and dsl is relly cool(btw I a newbie, but dsl have helped to learn some stuff more quickly)

I googled and saw somewheres that modprope has a problem with detecting pnp(I don't know)

when dsl detected my soundcard it said unknown pnp sound chip: driver sb
I then have the mixer dockapp but dsl hangs when I tried to play mp3

any help anyone thanx

ALSA seems broke to me on the DSL 1.4 HD install. Modprobe can't find the ALSA modules.Same thing happened to me. OSS works for me though. I installed Vector 5.1 to test ALSA. ALSA doesn't seem to have any advantage over OSS for my ESS 1878 sound card, so I'm going back to DSL to benefit from the large library of debian packages.

If ALSA is doing a bad job of detecting your card, just tell it which driver module to use.  Use this boot parameter -

dsl alsa=als100

Then when booted check that this module is listed with "lsmod".  If not, load it manually "modprobe snd-als100".

If still no success you may need to load it specifying hardware settings -
modprobe snd-als100 irq=? dma8=? dma16=?

Run "modinfo snd-als100" to see what settings are possible.

Hey, I recently installed DSL for the first time on an old Gateway Laptop I have.  It has an ESS 1879 sound card.  However, I have no idea how to get it to work.  I don't even know what packages I need to get or anything.  Could anyone please explain it to me? Thanks.
