With the "Agere Systems AC'97 Modem" in my Compal DL70 (aka Chembook 2070) laptop, I booted up DSL and got no message saying that Lucent Winmodem was detected.  I started to realize that it used different drivers when I put in the KANOTIX live CD. The knet program in KANOTIX detected the modem as a Smart Link modem.  It silently dialed and was connected.  This is just to remind you that some "Agere" AC97 modems actually work with Smart Link drivers when the ltmodem one doesn't.
