I get to
*******
sudo depmod -a
and I get a bunch of error codes with mismatched symbols or something.

then modprobe ndiswrapper doesn't do anything.

system doesn't seem to recognise my card at all.

Does anybody know what's wrong?

If your card has a prism chipset then try:

sudo modprobe prism54

Otherwise you need to have your windows .sys and .inf for you card  and use

ndiswrapper -i your_card.inf

before you try modprobe ndiswrapper

EDIT: If this is that broadcomm device then this has been discussed many times. Use the search tool and you will find your answer
