I've been using DSL for a while and think it's a great distro. But since I'm using a laptop I have a combined modem and network card (Xircom Cardbus). And I can't connect to the internet with the modem. It works on knoppix 3.3 though. When booting I get the message: "Card Services release does not match". Nevertheless I tried the config script but couldn't get out on the line. I would be thankful for any kind of help to make it work (if at all possible)!

Thanks in advance!

What version of DSL are you using?
Does the ethernet part work OK?
Have you tried to manually select ttyS1 from within pppconfig?

I use a combo card that happens to be a Linksys, both ethernet and modem work fine. I do have to select ttyS1 during the  pppconfig setup

Thanks for your input. I'm using the latest release of DSL 0.6.2 and have also tried with 0.6.1 but the result is the same. When I use pppconfig I get to the point when I select the authentication method (for me CHAP) and after that the window just disappears. So I don't even get to the part when I select type of modem. Usually the one I use is ttyS4. So probably I would have to configure the whole thing manually. Since I haven't done that with DSL before I just don't know how to go about it. I would be very thankful for help in that matter.

Yours, sincerely

meo, thanks for very good input. It really help me to find the problem. The behavior of pppconfig should not do what you described. I will fix it for the next release. But to get you going.... Please try this, it should work. At a shell prompt type:
sudo touch /opt/ppp/chap-secrets
Then re-try configuring your modem. Please let me know how it goes.

Thanks for your help "roberts". Your last suggestion got me through the configscript. I chose ttyS1 for the modem. When I start dialing the provider dialog appears and I choose my provider and press enter. But that's it. Nothing happened after that. I made a "$ps -ax" inquiery but there was no pppd running. Frankly I just don't know what to do. If you have any more suggestions I am more than eager to listen to them (read them I mean). I just like DSL so much for it's portability and it would be nice if I got an internet connection on my own box too (even if it's by modem).

Many thanks in advance,
meo
