I just go dsl in the mail yesterday.  I can't get it to recognize the modem. I'm running the live cd on a compaq presario 1245 laptop which had win 98se on it. The modem is on com 2, but when I configure dialup net working, dsl can't find it. I know the modem works.  What to do?

Hello,

If you open "Aterminal" and type "lspci" do you see a line that resembles the following?

0000:00:0a.0 Communication controller: Lucent Microelectronics WinModem 56k (rev 01)

If so, your modem will use port "ttyS14".

Good luck.

In Aterminal when I type lspci, I see

Host bridge: OPTi Inc. 82C701 [FireStar Plus] (rev 32)
ISA bridge: OPTi Inc.  82C700 [FireStar] (rev31)
CardBus bridge; Texas Instruments PCI1131 (rev 01)
CardBus bridge:  Texas Instruments PCI1131 (rev 01)
VGA compatible controller: Neomagic Corporation NM2160 [MagicGraph 128XD] (rev 01)
USB controller: OPTi Inc. 82C861 (rev 10)
IDE interface: OPTi Inc. 82C825 [Firebridge 2] (rev 30)

no listing for any communications controller anywhere

Hello,

Please boot DSL from your CD and press the "F2" key before loading continues with the default settings.

Type "dsl acpi=off pci=assign-busses" and press the Enter key.

Perhaps your system is among those for which irq conflicts/hardware detection problems are circumvented by those boot codes.

Good luck

Ok, I tried this at boot up.

dsl vga=789 (gotta have this or the display looks like crap) acpi=off pci=assign-busses

The result was the same as  before.

On a guess, I tried ttyS14 and got a message about no such device.

Win 98 which is on the machine, identifies the modem as Compaq Presario 56K-DF  ISA modem version 1.6.15

The machine itself is a Compaq Presarion 1245 with 160 meg of Ram, 3 gig hard drive and running at 333 Mhz, if that helps any.
