an isa winmodem?

No idea if using "lspci -v" would give more information, but you could run "dmesg" to see system logs.

Well, I don't know what to do next.  Win 98 says it's an ISA modem, but if you look at the specs on the hp/compaq website they claim it's a lucent. Thing is, tttXXX17 doesn't work.  Maybe it's something I'm doing wrong, I'm new to Linx and DSL. I was thinking of trying a frugal install, cause I can't seem to write to the floppy or the usb flash drive although they are apparently mounted and I was able to format a floppy.

You're not doing "something wrong".  The lucent winmodems can come with either a PCI or an ISA interface.

I had hoped that yours had a PCI interface but that an IRQ conflict had interferred with its function.  Had I been thinking more clearly, I would have assumed first that the absence of a listing for your modem in the lspci output probably indicated that the modem used an ISA interface.

One report of success with a linmoden driver on a presario 1245 is cited below:

Happy Hunting.
