I cant get it to connect to outside IPs either. It just sits at "Contacting host" and shows a little bit of network traffic, but nothing happens. I tried a few different IPs too just to make sure it wasnt one that was down or something.

Is there maybe a program i can download for the windows PC that will send whatever info over the network DSL needs to be set up properly? Other than that, im completely stumped as to what to try next.

I'm newbie also and haven't set up a local network with XP
BUT perhaps XP won't automatically configure your DSL net settings for you ...like it might for another Windows machine...? Unless XP uses DHCP to do this???

Perhaps you need to do some googling on this.

Your dsl net settings (right-click desktop, system, net etc)have to point at your "gateway" (the internal IP address that your XP machine (the "host") calls itself on your network, and you need a netmask etc.

If you type ifconfig in a shell in dsl, what numbers come up?

How to set up a Debian proxy server should answer this question.
