I'm newbie also and haven't set up a local network with XP BUT perhaps XP won't automatically configure your DSL net settings for you ...like it might for another Windows machine...? Unless XP uses DHCP to do this???
Perhaps you need to do some googling on this.
Your dsl net settings (right-click desktop, system, net etc)have to point at your "gateway" (the internal IP address that your XP machine (the "host") calls itself on your network, and you need a netmask etc.
If you type ifconfig in a shell in dsl, what numbers come up?
