Re. WPA, some Linux wifi drivers natively support WPA encryption, and I think atmelwlandriver does too, but it's difficult to find documentation about WPA configuration. iwpriv is a utility which is used to configure a driver's unique functions such as WPA features.
wpa_supplicant, from http://hostap.epitest.fi/wpa_supplicant/, is a "helper" application to add WPA support.
According to this - http://atmelwlandriver.sourceforge.net/iwpriv.txt atmelwlandriver seems to need both iwpriv and wpa_supplicant.
