I'm no expert on ax25/packet networks.. played with them a lot many years ago..
Most of the old faithful 1200 baud packet networks have gone, replaced with the
aprs networks of today..
Very few of the older tnc bootroms like rose, thenet, etc. are still up today.
Now, with the unproto protocols used in aprs , the networks can handle
much more traffic.. I can send one-line emails to anyone, anywhere from my car,
using a laptop, a tnc, and a 2 watt HT. I'm guessing the soundmodem.dsl will
work in place of a tnc for this...
Echolink is now the software of choice for Inet-2-radio gateways..
The older FBB bulletin boards are all but gone here too.. 
Only 1 or 2 are still up around here, leftovers from another day-in-time..
I have used the echolink software in DSL, it works fb , but you'll need to
install the alsadebs.dsl , as OSS sound drivers do not work.. Alsa does.
That will get you on any repeater on the network in the world
from any inet connected computer ... You'll need an echolink enabled
repeater in range of your HT to communicate with other echolink systems.
Another fun thing to do was to get yourself an email address assigned
with the arpanet , but again, without good packet networks in your area
to support it, it has become almost an inet-only thing, another dinosaur..
Explore the aprs network.. I enjoy working the ISS with it.
It has an aprs enabled repeater on it.. It's fun to bounce messages to
Mexico, Canada, etc. from here in Texas when it flies overhead.
Curiously, it still has a packet node BBS on it, but works on the APRS freq..
It's also fun to live-chat with other hams by monitoring the aprs bulletins,
and seeing the traffic passing thru the freq.
