I am new to DSL and just download and burn a CD, I got 2 problems. Firstly, during boot up my Philips LCD monitor can't adjust to the frequency, I must boot to 800x600 although the monitor is capable of 1024x768@60HZ. Secondly, I can't dial out, DSL can not recognize my US Robotics connected to COM1, I manually setup it up but still can't dial, no warning just nothing happen beside the dialer console shows up.
I have other systems installed on the same PC and all hardware are working fine, any idea ?

Almost all 56K internal modems these days are software modems; they are deliberately designed to function only under Windows.

You might find drivers that will allow you to connect through your existing modem here:

Hopefully someone with more knowledge than my illustrious self will have some answers for both of us on this thread:

but an easier solution if you have another PC would be to use a crossover cable to share the internet connection on your Windows box; there is nothing to configure in DSL; just boot on up and type the URL into the address bar in DILLO.

Another possibility would be an external modem, but even external modems can be softmodems. I'll post another reply on this thread with specific brands and model numbers if I wind up going that route sucessfully, as this is a very common problem among us newbies.

hth many; I'm not a spammer and other folks have recommended ANY serial modem and suggested picking them up used on eBay; I do prefer internal modems for the folks I put together PCs for and have a personal interest in this issue so I'm not going to shut up without a serious warning and/or a slap on the wrist.

Thank guys, but my modem is a true serial hardware modem I used on M$ without driver, also on Suse no problem, but it is invisible to DSL, strange.

Maybe your "COM1" port is actually a different port in DSL.

Try dialing from

/dev/ttyS0
/dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS2
/dev/ttyS3

and see if any of these ports work.
