Haven't tried make in ages, but I believe you need to install at least the gnu-utils and gcc1 packages before you can "make" under DSL. Both are in the repository, under System. Repository / Apps May possibly need more than that, I can't remember.
There's also the Alien rpm to deb converter in there, which you need if you want to do anything with rpm's. But I don't know how much joy you'd have, as I've never tried it. Pretty sure you'd also need dsl-dpkg installed to get anywhere with the resulting .deb file.
