An update:
I found my pcmcia card on the ndiswrapper confirmed list at sourceforge.net, and started over, using their bcmwl5.inf driver file instead of the one that came with my card. Lo & behold, when I do a a modprobe ndiswrapper the power lite on the card comes on, and I get a wlan0 entry in the system log. wlan0 now shows up when I do an iwconfig.
My problem now seems to be that I am not able to configure the card's essid , channel, etc, via iwconfig. The commands execute, but the card's configuration remains unchanged. I've seen posts here where folks bypass iwconfig & use wlan-ng to config their cards, but I haven't quite got my head around that yet. As always, suggestions are appreciated.
