Greetings from the utterest newbie possible - apologies in advance.

DSL looks great and flies on my 300Mhz 64MB dinosaur.

Its primary purpose is so I can play with the Mambo CMS I will install on top of XXAMP, delivering the result to my Win 2000 laptop's web browser.

Both PCs appear to recognise their own ethernet cards. First things first: is a crossover cable the way to connect?

If so, erm, what next? I'm utterly in the dark. Can someone send me to the best relevant web site for instructions or, even better, can you advise me direct? :)

Many thanks

Dave

You can conect two machines with a crossover cable, but I'm gonna save you some time.  Buy a router.

Really.

You can pick one up from Wal-Mart for about $40, or get a used one off ebay or wherever.  You'll pull your hair out tyring to get the machines networked with a cross-over cable alone.

After both machines are plugged into the router, you can point your web browser to the servers IP address and voila, everything works.

Micro Center has a (Wired + Wireless both) router on sale for $14.99 today after rebates.

Circuit City has one for $19.99 after rebates.

Check out www.salescircular.com for sales in your part of the USA (if you live in the USA, that is).

also: maybe IBLS is what you need? it contains full LAMP and some more stuff and is still 50mb, dsl is not ideal for webserving, although i would say it is the best for desktop.
