  You might want to try changing the "nodma" boot option to "dma" and see if your machine can handle it.  I was getting timeouts on hd and cd with either option, so I think my hardware is having problems.  That SB has been running for many years churning out a setiathome work unit every 50 to 65 hours.
  Also, my experience of only performing a coldboot and never inserting or removing pcmcia cards might be historical.  I started using the 3CCFE575BT with a pcmcia scsi adapter card in 1999, and the scsi pcmcia drivers would not allow card removal and re-insertion.
