Hi all,
Im pretty new to the DSL scene, and fairly new to linux altogether, however i do know when something doesn't seem to be right,
Ive got a MSI Nforce2 motherboard, with an onboard network controller, when i boot DSL and the network cable is attached to the network, DSL crashes going into X, however when the network cable is not attached, the boot is successful, im in X and can then safetly attach the network gain, gain an ip address from my DHCP server, and away i go.
The DHCP server is a windows server 2003 DHCP server, it seems to be something to do with this as when the hub is disconnected from the DHCP server router hub, DSL boots fine.
Is there anyone else who has ever experienced this type of problem, and anyone know of any fixes?

Well known issue with nforce2 mobos ..

Your workaround is what I've seen others do for now.

But DSL is improving all the time..
( The growth rate and version release rate is impressive )

You can also either use framebuffer mode, or install Xfree86 and use the appropriate driver for your card. Read that as "not vesa", because Xfree86's vesa still will not work with nforce boards with the nic cable plugged in.

Alright, i think il just stick with the plugging and uplugging workaround for now then, if its only with nforce2 motherboards it wont matter so much, the machine is just a test machine so i can live with it being a bit dodgy. Thanks for your help guys.

As SU said, just boot with framebuffer mode;
At the initial bootprompt, type in "fb1024x768" or "fb800x600" (minus quotes), and when asked select framebuffer, not xvesa, for your xserver. That way you don't have to unplug and re-plug, and I haven't noticed any real difference in display.
Not sure if you can append other commands to the fb one (eg "fb1024x768 toram norestore"), I think it works a little differently?

And if you get XFree86 installed and running, this also negates the problem, and lets you get the higher refresh rates (standard xserver is limited to 60Hz).
