I'm new to DSL.  I have my PC and Laptop running usb images.  I have a DELL 1600 laptop with an internal 10/100 connection and an internal WIFI card.  DSL does not recognise either of these network adapters.

Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

Run lspci in a terminal window - this should give some info about your cards.
