Ok so i was looking for an OS to install on an old pc of mine and i stumbled across this.

Realising my laptop (which has a dead harddrive) would be perfect to mess around with this etc.

It boots fine and it all seems to be running fine except everything looks .. retarded.

Ive tried changing resolution and bit depth but all that does is make it looke more retarded and smaller.

Its hard to explain what it looks like, and i cant take a picture of it. I can still KIND OF read things that are on the screen but some menus dissapear or have no text on them.

Im pretty sure it might be the drivers or something for the display? im not really sure at all, complete linux n00b but i wanted to play around.

Much thanks if anyone can help :D

boot: fb1024x768 and going through the setup seemed to work for me.

It runs reaaaally slow though, is there any way to have it working without framebuffering?

Dude,
I have a Cpi R400GT, and with any linux I needed to change the resolution.  Apparently it only supports 16bit graphics.  Just run the xsetup.sh I think that's it.  Anyways you can run it from the menu graphically.  And when you get the color part, make sure it is 16 bit not 24.

anyone know how to get acpi working on this thing?  I can't get the battery to show up, and I've tried alot of things.  Doesn't work on the live cd either.

When working with these older Dells, ensure you download/install the latest FLashBIOS updates.
