I recently tried to boot a Sony 505 series laptop using DSL, but was promptly stopped by a message saying that the image was not found on the device.  I am assuming that for some reason the cdrom, because it is on a docking station, is not accessed in the same way a standard cdrom would. So lilo isn't able to acquire the boot image.  I was wondering if there was a work-around for this.

Yes,

Try searching the forums for "poorman" or "frugal" install.

Both will work from a computer that has an abnormal CDROM drive.

Thanks for the help, unfortunately the laptop is no longer on my bench so I'll have to wait until I encounter another one to
try it out.
