I tried using a Zydan usb adapter as well, and I get the same system freeze when I try to connect. Any suggestions?

How long did you wait?

Sometimes, with my WPC54G, I have to wait a minute or two for it to connect.... works great once it does, and I am using NDISWrapper with the Linksys Windows driver.

Only other thing I can think of is to make sure you are using the latest driver.

I'm not sure if  this will help or not....

First have you seen my post at: http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/talk/node/256

Second, I'm currently on a Toshiba satellite 2805-s202 using a linksys wpc11 version 4.  when I do a lspci this is what I get

0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX Host bridge (rev 03)
0000:00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX AGP bridge (rev 03)
0000:00:05.0 Bridge: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ISA (rev 02)
0000:00:05.1 IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE (rev 01)
0000:00:05.2 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB (rev 01)
0000:00:05.3 Bridge: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ACPI (rev 03)
0000:00:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100] (rev 09)
0000:00:08.1 Serial controller: Xircom Mini-PCI K56Flex Modem
0000:00:0b.0 CardBus bridge: Toshiba America Info Systems ToPIC95 PCI to Cardbus Bridge with ZV Support (rev 20)
0000:00:0b.1 CardBus bridge: Toshiba America Info Systems ToPIC95 PCI to Cardbus Bridge with ZV Support (rev 20)
0000:00:0c.0 Multimedia audio controller: Yamaha Corporation YMF-754 [DS-1E Audio Controller]
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. 86C270-294 Savage/IX-MV (rev 13)
0000:15:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8180L 802.11b MAC (rev 20)

I have a frugal install with perm home and opt directories so my boot parms will be different then yours but mine are:
root=/dev/hda5
vga=normal
quiet
pci=noacpi
apm
frugal
dma
toram
mydsl=hda6
restore=hda5
home=hda5
opt=hda5

I'm running 2.3 of DSL on this machine.

I'd suggest you try running from the liveCD and see if you can get it working from that first.
