I got a Latitude c610 laptop for cheap and DSL boots fine on it but it does not find a network controller.  When I enterred lspci I do not see an entry for the ethernet controller.  I am not sure if this means there an installed network work controller that is not supported or it is missing or broken.  When I  researched this on the web it looks as if the network controller should be a 3c920 embedded chipset.  I did try doing a modprobe using the 3com drivers I found but these complained about not finding any supporting controller.

Does anyone have an idea how I can move forward?  Thanks for the help.

No response.  Ok let me ask a different question.

If I run lspci -v and I do not see an ethernet controller device listed can I assume there is a hardware problem with my network adaptor?

Thanks.

Try seeing if the card module was loaded in the boot with "dmesg".
For me their is a line saying:

Quote

eth0: RealTek RTL8139 Fast Ethernet at 0x6400, IRQ 11, 00:0a:cd:0f:22:dc.

Since your running a laptop their is the non-remote chance the module is simply missing, or nopcmcia is blocking it...

The nopcmcia boot option does not help nor does dmesg identify a network controller of any type.  Loading windowsXP also does not find a network device.  So I have to believe my issue is a hardware problem. Using either a wireless or ethernet pcmcia card allows internet access with DSL so I will go with that solution.

Did you check your bios?

If it's still under warranty, you could always send it in to be fixed.
